30. The Nurse

Marie had just finished nursing school and started working at Mercy General. Although she really loved her job, she found it difficult getting along with some of the people she worked with. They were mostly young doctors and interns who, like her, just finished school and were doing their residencies at Mercy. The problem with most of them was that they enjoyed pranking one another and would often pull in other members of the staff as well.

She often had trouble sleeping with the joking and laughing bunch living in the dorms near the hospital because they stayed up late making an unearthly amount of noise. Marie worked long hours and needed to get as much sleep as she could. But whenever she complained about their college humor antics the mischievous bunch would simply laugh in her face and tell her to keep quiet. They were having fun and there was nothing wrong with that.

Eventually things got so bad Marie had to make an official complaint to the hospital administration which resulted in all involved getting a written warning. After that incident, the doctors began to hate Marie and spent the next few days coming up with a scheme to get back at her. Finally one of the doctors thought up the perfect prank.

That night, they broke into the morgue and cut the arm off a cadaver. Before the end of Marie’s shift, they snuck into her room and tucked the arm into the foot of her bed. Laughing to themselves as they waited out in the hall for Marie to get to the dorms, they thought it would really teach her a lesson. She’d feel the arm when she got in to go to sleep and it would really scare her.

The guys watched as Marie turned in for the night but to their surprise there was no screaming or angry shouting. Just silence. After a while they grew tired of waiting and turned in themselves believing that they placed the arm too low for Marie to touch.

The next morning when they all awoke the doctors went to check on Marie. Receiving no answer as they stood knocking on her door, they let themselves in. The room seemed empty and the sheets were turned over as though they'd been slept in. The doctors searched the room for Marie and when they opened her closet, they were greeted with a terrible sight.

Marie was curled up in the corner of her closet. Her hair had turned completely white from fright and her eyes were rolled back in her head. She had gone insane. Her face had the appearance of age with the wrinkles that had formed along her skin but worst of all she was chewing on the severed arm.
