“I thought you said he was dead!” Troy shouted in Natalie’s
direction.
“He was…he is!” she exclaimed and backed away from the
stretcher. “Maybe it was gas.”
“Gas? His hand came out from under the sheet and touched me.
Dead men don’t move!” Troy stated the obvious. “You must be incredibly bad at
your job to miss that!”
“I know how to do my damn job! He has NO PULSE!”
“Oh for Pete’s sake,” Matthew growled. Grabbing a combat
knife from his right boot, he pulled back the sheet and placed the blade
beneath the man’s nose and waited. “No breath. He’s dead and you’re a fucking
idiot. Now that we’ve cleared that up, you think we can get a move on?”
Suddenly the body shot up and grabbed Matthew from behind.
Lorelei screamed and threw herself into a corner. “I’m an idiot?” Troy yelled
and swung at the injured man as he clawed for Matthew again. “Does he look
fucking dead to you?”
The man jumped down off the gurney and Matthew fell to the
ground beneath him. “What the fuck?” he shouted as the man growled and hissed,
trying his best to get at Matthew while he continued fighting him off. “Feel
free to jump in and help at any time!” he yelled to the others standing by,
watching the scuffle.
Troy swung again, clipping the man on the side of the head.
He turned and roared. Tearing forward, he lunged at Troy, knocking him head
first into the vending machine. Coins and sodas rolled freely to the floor as
Troy tried to regain his balance. Getting to his feet, Matthew came to Troy’s
rescue, stabbing the man in the back and kicking him forward against the wall.
“What the hell is this guy on?!” he exclaimed, watching as the new injury only
seemed to incite the man even more.
“Matthew, catch!” Natalie shouted and tossed a cane from the
umbrella stand beside the door. Clutching it like a bat, Matthew swung hard.
The cane connected with a thud. The sickening pop of the man’s jaw echoed
through the room. He crashed to the floor.
Matthew moved forward. Stepping over the prone man, he
raised the cane again and struck with all his might. The man’s skull cracked
open and blood and brain tissue leaked to the floor. Matthew tossed the broken
stick to the corner and turned towards the group. “Is everyone ok?”
“Yeah we’re fine no thanks to him,” Troy huffed in Avery’s
direction. “Good job, Avery. Really man, it was appreciated.”
“Oh I’m sorry. I was barely able to lift my arm. I’ve been
having this pain and I’m not sure why. Oh yeah that’s right, SOMEBODY BASHED MY
SHOULDER WITH A FUCKING BAT!”
“I’M SORRY!” Troy shouted in return and quickly changed the
subject. “What are we going to do about this?”
“He’s dead,” Natalie replied. “What more can be done?”
“I don’t mean him, I mean the rest of them! See ‘cause, I
don’t know if it’s failed anyone else’s attention but, we’re standing in a
hospital. That’s ground zero for sick people and death! I mean, thirty seconds
ago we were heading to the morgue to put him with the rest of the bodies! Who’s
willing to bet they’ve all stopped resting peacefully?”
“Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god, what if he’s right? What
if that’s what happened on the 4th floor? They all got up and
started attacking.” Lorelei whined.
“That would explain why the place was emptied; people were
too busy fleeing,” Matthew said.
“No, no, no. We can’t stay here. We need to get out!” Lorelei
shrieked and moved to the center of the room.
“And go where?” Avery asked, turning to face the squealing
socialite.
“Anywhere but here! It’s not safe here. We need to run!”
“Run? Those things are EVERYWHERE. We wouldn’t make it 10
feet!”
“He’s right,” Natalie agreed. “We’d have a harder time out
there than defending ourselves in here.”
“I don’t care!” she shouted. “We can’t stay here! There’s
nowhere safe to hide!”
“I tell you what, princess, why don’t I take down the barricade and
let you on your way,” Matthew mocked. “The rest of us are going to
find a place that can serve as a safe room and bunker down. We could be here
for a while. Natalie, is there any place like that in here?”
“Uh, well, patient rooms don’t have locks on the doors but the
records room does. It’s quiet, ventilated but it’s not close to the cafeteria or
bathrooms. The administrative wing might be our best bet. There are several
offices up there with plenty of space; some even have couches to sleep on and there’s a
small café at the end of the hall. But…”
“But what?” Lorelei moaned.
“It’s on the 4th floor.”

Well that was exciting. LOL Man, so Lorelei is going to be useless, I can see that. May need to throw her to the wolves, or in this case zombies. LOL
ReplyDeleteI do hope they are safe, but something tells me that won't be the case. As Matthew said, they are in a hospital and it's empty for a reason and I don't think it's a good reason.
Haha Lorelei...yeah. She'll come in handy soon but the others might not want to save her after she's proven herself :P Her voice (in my head) is like nails on a chalkboard.
DeleteBut they have medical supplies and food and peace and quiet...for now O.o I think Troy's outlook is the best. He's expecting the worst out of every situation but he's prepared to do what he has to in order to survive. I think every group needs one of those.
Thank you for reading :)
The level of detail with the soda & coins on the ground is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm at the intermediate level of photo editing so I try and use CC as much as possible. That and the fog emitter. It's really great for a lot of things!
