“You sure this will work?” Dominic asked, watching Troy prepare
himself to crawl through the opened vent above them.
“I’m sure we have no other choice,” he replied, checking the
load on his weapon.
“The vents won’t get you downstairs,” Mathew said.
“I know, but with any luck, it’ll get me some place where we
can maybe make a decent stand, or even an escape,” Troy replied.
“Remember, five minutes. If you’re not back by then, we’ll
assume you’re gone,” Dominic said.
“And then what?”
“And then…we’ll get creative. Let’s hope it doesn’t come
down to that.” Dominic gave Troy a boost, and he quickly disappeared into the
vents.
“We need to figure out something else,” Ryan sad, pushing
against the door. The chair had been forced out and everything else appeared
nailed to the floor. “It won’t be much longer before those monsters get inside
and then we’ll all be fucked.”
“What about all this equipment?” Aisha asked. “Can’t it be
used for something?” she moved and began ransacking the cabinets, searching
every door and canister. Pulling out the larger, more dangerous looking items,
Aisha placed them all into the center of the room.
Katrina joined in, rifling through the higher cabinets while Aisha concentrated on the ones below. “What about this?” she pulled a defibrillator from a shelf and placed it on top of the counter.
“What do you want to do? Bring these things back to life? I’m not so sure that’ll go over well,” Ryan joked.
“The only other choice we have is to let them inside,”
Katrina replied.
“No, what?” Aisha exclaimed, that nervous shake re-entering
her voice. “That’s crazy! There are too many of them, we’ll all die.”
“Not if we’re smart. Ryan, you can control the amount that
enters. Take them in small doses. If we can take enough of them down, we may be
able to get out of this alive.” Ryan looked over his shoulder towards Katrina
and she shrugged before picking up her weapon from the table.
“And if we can’t control the flow, what then?”
“What choice have we? We can stay here until your arms give out trying to come up with alternate solutions, or we can fight and try to get out of here in one piece.”
Ryan sighed. The options were slim, Katrina was right. Either
way the chances of survival were not good. They could remain holed up, pushing
at the door to keep the monsters out and starve to death, or go out in a blaze
of glory. A smile tugged at the corners of Ryan’s mouth and he laughed to
himself. “Why not?” he said in a humorous tone. “See you on the other side.”
Troy kicked the cover off the ceiling vent and shimmied his
way into the room. It was dark, but he could make out a fence behind him and a desk
to the right. The evidence locker. An ounce of excitement swept him
towards the gate. He pulled at the combination lock on the door and grunted. He
was looking for a miracle, and it seemed they may have just found one.

I have to say I'm a little weary of Katrina's plan. LOL I don't know how well that will work out especially with skittish Aisha. Hopefully the groups will find their way back to each other.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jazen here, I'm not all that fond of Katrina's plan, it seems a bit eyebrow raising in a worrisome way.
ReplyDeleteNow I just want everyone to find each other so that there can be a small sigh of relief for all of them.
