29: Fractured

“Are they still coming?” Kalene asked as Karima looked out the window.

“No, I don’t see anything. Maybe Lizzy was right. I think they were just early trick-or-treaters. I can’t imagine anyone would want to actually go out on Halloween if things get as scary as Everett is making it sound!”

“You’re right. I know I wouldn’t want to be caught…” the last words stuck in Holley’s throat as she couldn’t bring herself to say the word “dead” in a house that was surely trying to do just that.

“I need to use the bathroom,” Quiana said waiting for someone to move with her. She and Nancy started for the stairs and the others moved to the living room to have a seat and calm themselves.

“OH MY GOD!” Leah yelled as the lights went out.

“Don’t panic, one of you was supposed to bring extra lights. Who was it?” Daijah asked looking around.

“Not I,” Nedra said stepping towards an armchair.

“Or me.”

“Oh my God are they in here? Are they in the house?”

“No I don’t think so.”

“Don’t think so? Are the doors locked?”

“Yes of course they are. And we can get the lights on. Just have to figure out who was supposed to bring the extra lights.”

“It was me,” Jill said. “But you can forget them.”

“Why? We need them,” Freedom said looking at her in disbelief.

“Because there are monsters waiting to make a meal out of me. Thanks but I’ll pass.”

“There’s nothing outside Jill! We’ve pretty much surmised that those were just trick-or-treaters.”

“Correction, you surmised that! I never agreed to say it was kids out for fun!”

“Jill we need those lights. Someone has to go and get them.”

“Yes but they’re out in the car, and it’s not going to be me,” Jill said looking towards the window. “I’m not going out there with those things!”

“There’s nothing out there!” Freedom again protested.

“Fine! Then you make the trip to the car and get the lights. We’ll watch you from the porch.”

“Fine, where are your keys?”

Jill tossed her the set of keys from her purse and the girls watched as Freedom stepped outside in the chilly air and walked towards the blue Ford Focus. She unlatched the trunk and sifted through the items before locating the box of candles and oil lanterns.

She slammed the trunk lid shut and started back towards the house. From behind her a low moan rumbled and began getting louder with each step she took. She froze in her steps and looked towards the house. “Guys? That’s not funny!” she yelled as she started up again.

The sounds grew louder still and she saw the group standing in the window watching her with looks of terror on their faces. Freedom slowly turned around and was met with the rotting face of a zombie not three feet away from her.

She yelled and tossed the box of lights as she started for the door. Not watching where she was going, she tripped on a tree root and fell hard to the ground. The girls moved towards the front door to help her when they heard more screaming.

“Hurry!” Kalene yelled. “We have to help her!”

“I’m trying,” Daijah said as she pulled and turned at the knob but it wouldn’t budge. “It’s stuck!”

There was more screaming outside and Lizzy shrieked in fear as she watched the zombie bite and scratch at Freedom from her fallen position. “It’s too late,” she cried. “It’s too late!”

Standing there in the darkened streets
all of his memories just bitter sweet
can’t remember years; painful and bleak
His body is sore, his mind is weak

Dampness lingers and fills the air
leaving fingerprints of mist on his skin bare
slowly he moves towards the house up the road
Dread and dismay shroud dark secrets untold

His days are filled searching empty dreams
Assured that before he’s come to this scene
Bodies pass by him and float down the gutter
“Was I the cause?” his mind filled with clutter

Stripped of everything but the ring on his finger
He entered the house as his fear still lingered
inside the room he is met with a fire
as he reaches the center the flames burn higher

Before him stands a demon but he doesn’t know his name
in a deep growl he speaks: “Welcome my child, glad you came.
Sit down beside me and rest your feet.
In a moment I’ll serve you something to eat.
You still enjoy a fresh kill I assume.
The smell of death on your hands fills the room.”

“Do you know me?” he asks with a curious stare
the demon simply nods and averts his glare
“Where am I going? Where have I been?”
His bloody palms revealing some forgotten sin

“You’re home now Son, no need to fear.
No longer shall you roam, you belong here.
These spirits they serve you; these cavern your hovel.
You are the one they call the Devil.”

Doubt hides itself as the sun starts to rise
He now knows his place amid the silent cries
and in the end his soured night recaptured
as memories once lost are no longer fractured.

  1. OMG OMG OMG!!!!! Freedom died...how could they let her go alone, what about being in groups. I can't believe they let her go out there by herself.

That zombie was creepy as hell!!!! In very scary movie fashion she had to trip and fall. I knew she was a goner and then the door was stuck.

So the Devil himself lives under the house???

No one was volunteering to go out there with those things. Freedom was brave but see where that got her? And the door conveniently stuck so the others couldn't reach her!

The trip and fall LOL classic! Don't you just hate when that happens?

Under the house...in the house...he's around for sure :)

    Thank you for reading! :)

  3. Freedom died!!! She was so brave to go outside, but I got a bad feeling about it. I think that they had better do without those lights. It'll be scarier, but its better than risking going outside for them.

That Zombie who got Freedom was so cool!!! Scary!! I wonder if anything from the house is controlling the Zombies. It seemed as if they knew someone would be coming out!

Very true but as you can see the lights are back, it's slightly explained in the beginning of the next but truth is the house was crashing every time I touched anything to the point where I took just the standard "Oh hey she's standing here" shot and closed it.

Interesting how that worked isn't it? Almost as if someone in there told them to come and take Freedom >:) Everett told them there was a rat, they still have not figured out whom!

    Thank you for reading!

Yeah the lights miraculously work again :D Her buddy wasn't about to go outside! She tossed her the keys and told her no :P

There is no sleep for them anymore. One day left and all they need to think about is survival!

Ha yes! The Devil, we'll see him again soon :)

    Thank you for reading! :D
