19: Fade to Black

“It’s still dark out,” Karima said staring out the window. “It’s 8 in the morning but the sun has not come out.”

Nancy joined her by the window and took a peek. “What is going on here?”

“Well I’m willing to bet it has something to do with the fact that we are standing over the burial of about a hundred people. Maybe this is what Everett was warning us about.”

“I think also it might be best to move all of the beds into the same room,” Holley suggested as she plopped down into the empty cushion beside Karima. “We should stick together as best as possible because I’d very much not like to run into any of those ‘others’ you mentioned.”

“Let’s go and take care of that now then,” Quiana said stepping towards the door. She stopped and looked over at Daijah who appeared lost in thought. She stood behind her and waited to catch her gaze and smiled. “Any luck on that ferry?”’

“None. As a matter of fact I think it’s hopeless. Whenever I try and call out on my cell I have all of a minute to speak to whoever answers before it goes dead from the lack of signal. I’m sorry I brought you all here and I hope you don’t hate me for it.”

“Of course not DJ,” Jill smiled. “Even with the ghosts and things that go bump in the night it’s been a pretty fun and interesting trip. I can understand your intentions were good. It’s not like you planned for us to be stranded here when danger struck right?”

She nodded and turned her attention back to her phone.

“If it’s dark like this the rest of the day, does that mean that all of those ‘things’ that Everett was talking about are coming soon too?”

“I wouldn’t worry about that,” Kalene smiled. “As long as we stick together everything should be fine. Plus, it’s not like we have anything to do outside the house right? We can lock the doors, board the windows and sit in here with our weapons at the ready.”

Daijah chuckled at the idea. “You sound like you’re gearing up for a Zombie apocalypse or something. Nothing has happened short of seeing a ghost; don’t let Everett scare you all completely to the point that you forget we’re here for a party. I promise I’ll keep working on getting us out of here if you promise you’ll try and have a little fun at least.”

The girls nodded and Nancy, Freedom, Lizzy and Nedra started after Quiana to get everyone moved into the one master bedroom. Jill, Holley, Kalene and Leah stayed in the living room rearranging the furniture and getting everything ready for movie night and Daijah headed for the kitchen again playing around with her phone.

She finished making up some finger sandwiches, drinks, popcorn and cheese sticks and Jill and Kalene came in to help move them to the living room.

“So what movies did you bring?” Leah asked taking a seat on the couch as Daijah rejoined them.

“All of my Nightmares, Friday the 13ths, Halloweens and the Horrorfest 8 Films to Die For series!” she said dropping a few DVDs beside the small television she brought with her.

Jill prepared to settle in when there was a scream from upstairs. The girls rushed towards the sound and found Nedra standing near the door to the study with a look of fear on her face.

“What is it? What happened Nedra?” Daijah asked placing a calming hand on her shoulder.

“Stay back! Stay away from me! I saw you!”

“Me? Nedra I was downstairs with Jill, Leah and Kalene.”

“No! No you were right here and you were holding that gun at me! You pulled the trigger and I screamed!”

“Nedra, she really was with us,” Leah confirmed. “We were getting everything ready for movies.”

“But I saw you!”

“No, you saw one of the hallucinations Everett warned us about,” Lizzy said stepping up behind her. “Looks like it’s started.”

“And we’re in for a long night!”

They only attack when the night is at its darkest
growls and snarls can be heard in the distance
better make haste because they’ll be here soon
howling and baying with strength from the moon

They move in packs and take pleasure in your fear
there’s nowhere to hide they can smell when you’re near
it’s the beast we all fear when we’re out at night
hoping and praying they’re not out for a bite

  1. Spooky. They are all ready seeing things. This is bad. If they start to turn on each other it will not end well.

Glad I read this one during the day.

  2. The voices will start soon, hallucinations came first and you're right; won't be long before they really get scared and start panicking!

I wasn't able to get shots last night because everyone was black blobs of nasty. It's been fixed so we're back on track YAY!

  3. WOW she saw you with a gun pointed at her? Did Everett say one would go crazy? Is it Neddy? She's gonna go "The Shining" on us? We are not all safe in the same room!

  4. But you wouldn't want someone to sleep in a dif room where something bad could happen would you?

LOL @ The Shining! "Here's Johnny!" But he came through the door in the scene so...if Nedra were to change rooms she'd really be the Shining then!

    Thank you for reading!
